SMALL-BOAT REGISTER
Minister asks for report
The Minister of Marine (Mr McCready) is in sympathy with some form of national registration for small power boats, but wants more information before he comes to a decision. Mr McCready said this in a letter received by the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday. Replying to a deputation from the board which waited on him on December 10, the Minister said he was not sure whether registration should be by central registry, by clubs or harbour boards, or what was the best way. “There are various problems and I am not wholly informed about these,” he said. “I am asking the Secretary of Marine (Mr R. N. Kerr) when he returns from overseas to let me have a report early in 1971 with particular reference to any arguments why there should not be national registration, and any problems which he foresees.”
It was a very fruitful meeting, said the chairman of the board’s smallcraft committee (Mr J. E. Mannering). It was one step nearer registration. “It was quite obvious that the main officer of the Marine Department present was against us,” said Mr R. G.
