PICKFORD FILMS

Gift to U.S. library

Mary Pickford, the pioneer motion picture star who became known as "America’s Sweetheart,” has donated 50 short films made by the Biograph company to the American Film Institute Collection at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Miss Pickford appears in 47 of the silent films, which were made between 1909 and 1913 and also featured such future stars as Lionel Barrymore and Lillian and Dorothy Gish. All but one of the 50 were directed by D. W. Griffith, who went on to achieve international fame

with his masterpiece, “The Birth of a Nation.” These short films supplement the feature films Miss Pickford gave to the Library of Congress in the 19405. They will be used by scholars and occasionally shown at special revivals.
