Unprecedented road toll

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 7. The year’s road fatality total reached unprecedented heights in November, the Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) said in a statement today.

He said the total number of road deaths at the end of the month stood at 591—21 more than for the full year last year, and 63 more than for the 11 months ended November, 1969. “The main increase in fatalities has occurred to motor-vehicle drivers' and their passengers. There has been a significant drop in the number of pedestrians killed. “The dismal record this year occurred in spite of a big reduction in the number of fatal accidents in November, when the death rate dropped from 51 last year to 31 last month. “The most noticeable drop in the month of November was in passenger fatalities,” said the Minister. “There were 22 passengers killed in

November last year, but only four this November. “It is unfortunate that the generally good performance of road users last month has not been evident throughout the whole of and I can only hope that all road users will make a very special effort to avoid giving impetus to our 1970 record road toll."
