MOSAIC OF SEEDS

A 24-year-old Christchurch business machine technician has made a big mosaic entirely of seeds, seeds. Mr L. R. Willan, of 62 Rahera Street, Spreydon, used 40 varieties of seed for the mosaic which is built on a base of chipboard measuring about 4ft by 2ft. The seeds are coloured and glued to the board. The mosaic depicts a figure of a Pharaoh receiving gifts from two other figures while a fourth figure, that of a girl, stands by playing a harp. It took him four months to make. Most of the seeds are New Zealand ones. Mr Willan procured these and other varieties from a Rangiora firm of seed merchants. He first gained the idea from a South African publication but received ideas for the design from books about Egypt He is planning another series of mosaic designs using the same method. He has not had any formal artistic training. k
