TROTTING James picked in Franklin mile

"The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. With Monsignor back to a mobile start and the New Zealand Cup winner, James, there is every possiblity of a very fast time in the mile Hosking Free-For-All at Alexandra Park tonight.

Others in the field with the ability to run a fast mile are Via Veneto, Scottish Charm and Black Watch, although Black Watch and Scottish Charm have drawn the outside positions. A wide draw at the mile post is a big handicap in mobile-start races.

It is inevitable that those starting from well out will have to cover considerable extra ground. Probably none of James’ rivals have the brilliant acceleration, as Monsignor which returned to Auckland none the worse for his exertions at the New Zealand Cup meeting. His form at Addington was disappointing but it cannot be said he had the best luck in the running in at least two of his races. His trainer, R. P. Norton, said yesterday Monsignor travelled very well and is confident the horse will acquit himself very well tonight. The outstanding three-year-old trotter, Rannach Boy, is strongly fancied for the Fred Smith Memorial, the second leg of the T.A.B. concession double. He failed on the first night of the meeting but considering how much ground he lost through an early break he did remarkably well to finish seventh. He is usually a safe beginner and the two-mile journey will suit him as he is a grand stayer. King High, Hair’s Hoping and Mister Melody seem likely to be his toughest rivals. The weather looks settled and the track will be fast. Selections: 6.10 p.m.—First Glenbrook
