HOPE FOR EARLY LAKE REPORT
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 23. I It was hoped that the . Parliamentary Select Com- i mittee now inquiring into i the raising of Lake Manapourl would be able to re- 1 port to Parliament before • the end of the present 1 session, the Prime Minister ! (Sir Keith Holyoake) said 1 today. The 'Prime Minister, who i declined to give any probable date for the end of the j session, said it would be re- j grettable if the committee, did not complete its consid- < eration of the matter before . the end of the session. i
Most observers believe the session will end next week. Tomorrow, the committee will hold its third public hearing of submissions on the raising of the lake. The chairman of the committee (Mr A. E. Allen) has said the Government may find it necessary to make a decision on the raising of the lake without the committee’s recommendation if a report is not made to Parliament this year. But the committee’s hearings have, been opened to all interested- parties wishing to make submissions, and it is thought that the weight of submissions may preclude an early report.
