Strong tennis entries likely

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. At least 17 women competitors from nine countries are likely to compete in the New Zealand tennis championships starting in Christchurch on February 1, the executive of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association was told last night.

According to the Australian association, which supplied the information, there

may be some other countries involved as well. All the likely players will be competing in the Federation Cup competition at Perth next week, and they have undertaken to stay on and play in some Australian tournaments as well as in the New Zealand championships. The teams likely to come to New Zealand are Canada, Britain, . Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, South Africa, Jugoslavia and Argentina. Although not every country will be fully represented, some will send their entire teams. Players include Miss Winnie Shaw, from Britain, a leading world player, and Miss Betty Stove (Netherlands) who is regarded as one of Europe’s top women players.
