Call on Portugal
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, Nov. 22. The United Nations Trusteeship ’ Committee has called on Portugal to grant independence to its African territories, “without further delay.” A resolution sponsored by 35 Afro-Asian countries was adopted by the committee with 90 votes in favour, 17 abstentions, and seven against. Portugal, South Africa, Britain, the United States, Brazil (Portugal’s traditional ally), Spain (Portugal’s neighbour) and Colombia voted against. The document also condemns “the intervention of South African forces against the peoples of the territories under Portuguese domination.” Several Latin American countries, most West Euro-| pean countries, including! France and the Nordic countries, abstained. African countries of Southern Africa close to both South Africa and the Portuguese territories, Lesotho, Botswana, and Malawi were absent. Swaziland abstained.
Hepatitis Cases.—Three adults in the Linwood, Lyttelton, and Waimairi districts contracted infective hepatitis last week, the Health Department reported yesterday.
