Sunday drink “years off”
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 23. The possibility of Sunday drinking was still a few years off, said the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon). The Mayor of Birkenhead (Mr B. L. Stanley), opening the Birkenhead Inn, described it as being one of the “finest family hotels in New Zealand.” Mr Muldoon, the guest speaker at the opening function, said that the inn belonged to the people—“lt can cater for anybody’s tastes, from beer and spirits to a cup of tea and snacks.” “It’s a fine example of service and hospitality,” said Mr Muldoon, who had earlier declared himself in favour of the recent changes in legislative and public attitudes towards drinking. But later, he said that Sunday drinking was still some years off. Late closing had not yet settled down completely.
