Monowai teams win in women’s softball

Monowai B, after a good start, tightened its fielding in the last three Innings of a women's softball match on Saturday, to hold Western Suburbs at bay, and in doing so reversed the first round result. At the end of the third innings In the Monowai A-Spreydon match, the score was level at 1-1. However, Monowai improved its batting and gradually drew away. Vanguard did well to hold Christchurch West to nine runs after five innings, but a driving onslaught tn the sixth brought an additional 14 runs for West. Results were:— Monowai 8 7, Western Suburbs 5. Monowai A 7, Spreydon 2. Christchurch West 22, Vanguard 1. Monowai A. v. Spreydon Monowai A's C. Brown, after hitting a two-bagger, scored on a similar hit by N. Beale to open her team’s scoring. Monowai A failed to score In Its next two innings, although J. Maher batted weu in the second. Strong batting by G. Gray, M. Eaton, J. Lee, and B. Makinson in the fourth resulted In Monowai A taking a three run lead. A. Phillips batted well In the fifth and, aided by a series of bunts, the side added three runs before being retired with loaded bases. Good base running by Phillips, a good hit by Eaton, and a sacrifice by Lee enabled Phillips and Gray to score in the sixth. Monowai A failed to score in Its last innings. Spreydon’s A. Caddie scored on errors in the first Innings which produced a good hit by M. Lee. With J. Baker gaining the only hit in the next five innings, Spreydon failed to increase its score. Trailing by eight runs in its last, errors and another good bit by Baker enabled Spreydon to score two runs before the side was retired.

B. Makinson had a good game on the mound for Monowai A gaining six strike-outs and only giving up three hits, two of these to Baker. Monowai A’s top batter was Phillips, closely followed by Eaton and Lee. Monowai B v. western Suburbs Monowai B began strongly with a hard drive by S. Stead and a two bagger by S. Stocker to score three runs in its first innings. The side doubled its score In the second with R. Phillips batting well, but two of the runs came from a fine two bagger by A. Maekaway-Jones. Monowai B’s only other run came in the fifth innings when A. Stead scored on errors. Errors aUowed Western Suburbs’ P. Alston, to score In its first turn at bat before Stead, Phillips, and Stocker combined in a double-play to end the Innings. Alston’s two bagger in the third brought two runs and she scored herself on errors. Hard driving and errors enabled V. Brooks to score in the fourth but Suburbs failed to score again because of good fielding—highlighted by C. Scott's assist catch. Stead pitched well for Monowai B, gaining two strike-outs and giving up two hits compared with her opposite, • Alston, who struck out three batters and conceded four hits. Christchurch West v. Vanguard West scored three runs In Its first innings, J. Patterson and K. Noonan both being prominent with the bat Noonan gained valuable support from V. Chambers and E. Ching, and by tile third innings the score had booh doubled. West’s sixth turn at bat was marked with power hitting and 14 runners crossed the plate before the side was retired. Vanguard’s sole run was scored by Y. Faulkner tn the second innings, after a strong hit from F. Lynch. M. Rhodes, West’s pitcher, gained one strike-out, and gave four hits in a controlled display.
