Barlow impressive in 800 metres

Third in the national 800 metres last season, L. Barlow (University-Shirley Boys’ High School) showed something of his class when he slipped the field in the 800 metres at the interclub athletics at Rugby Park on Saturday.

Gliding into overdrive with about 250 yards to go Barlow swooped past the leaders to be 20 yards dear before they could respond. Although not outstanding Barlow’s time of Imin 55.95ec was a good early season run. Of greater significance was the way be dominated the final sprint. Noted normally for the strength of his finishing burst, the Canterbury cham- . pion, M. Clarkson (New Brighton) was surprisingly relegated to a distant fourth. G. McKechnie (UniversityShirley) had a most encouraging run, after being frustrated last season by continual set-backs because of injury. After closing the gap slightly to Barlow, McKechnie finished about 14 yards behind in Imin 57.65ec, a couple of strides ahead of the fast finishing T. McGillivray (Technical). Under-15 record In an impressive sustained run, the 13-year-old Denise Shield (Christchurch) took 8.950 c off the girls under-15 800 metres record, when she was second in the senior women's race. Timed at » min 32.65ec, Miss Shield showed that she is In good form for whan she and several other Christchurch club athletes will make special attempts on record* at Ashburton on Wednesday evening. The event was won by another promising young athlete, Miss A. Tait (Christchurch), who surged through powerfully to win in 2min 30.8 sec, after Miss Shield had set the pace for most of the distance. Miss Shield’s time will not qualify for a record because it was done in a higher age group Winner of the boys* under-15 high jump, with sft 6in, P Crampton (St Bede’s College), narrowly missed in an attempt on the provincial record of the age group. Crampton had the bar raised to sft OJln, an inch above the record. After Crampton had brushed over the bar with a "Fosbury-flop” on his second leap at that height, the record seemed to be his. The bar quivered and bounced and then dropped into the pit after him. He failed again on his third attempt. An aggressive run A candidate for the New Zealand team for the international cross-country running championships in Spain early next year. J. sheddan showed by an aggressive run in the 3000 metres steeplechase that he is regaining something of the dash that gave him secnod in the national crosscountry championship at the end of the winter. Running with much more zip than in a similar event last week, Sheddan im--1 proved by more than 17sec to record 9min 18.2 sec and easily beat last week’s winner. J. D Macdonald. The Commonwealth Games representative and national champion, W. J. Nicholl (Technical), was In good form again with the hammer. The burly detective whipped the 161 b weight out to 183 ft. An encouraging aspect was the performance of B. Harland (Technical) in second place. Improving 7ft on his opening day throw a fortnight ago. Harland was only IBin short of Nichol’s winning distance.

(prints The Canterbury junior 200 metres and national 400 metres champion, J Bailey (High School Old Boys) marked his first competition of the season with a win In the senior 200 metres. Although the time of 23.35ec was well short of Bailey’s best time, a wind assisted 21.6 sec, it was

nonetheless a good "pipe-opener" Into a stiff head wind in the finishing straight. This win made up for a disappointing run earlier in the senior 70 metres, in which he was an '‘also ran*. The shorter race was won by T. Cochrane, also High School Old Boys, in B.2sec from M. Poulsen (Unlver-slty-Shirley) and B. Cochrane (New Brighton). __ , , Mrs A. HorsneU (Technical) dominated the women’s sprints winning both the 70 metres (9.4 sec) and the 200 metres (26.5seci. As well she was a member of the winning Technical relay team. “The Farmers’ Athlete of the week *’ award was presented to M. Anderson (St Bede’s College), for winning the junior 1500 metres In 4mln S.teec. his best time by about 2sec.
