Assad forms Cabinet

I (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copuright) BEIRUT, Nov. 22. j The new Syrian transitional Cabinet of LieutenantI General Hafez Al-Assad, apI pointed yesterday, has set it- | self two goals: The formation of a national front of I progressives inside the country and rapprochement with | progressive Arab countries. The new Government’s [ policy-programme was announced on Monday, when a provisional national leadership of the Baath Party was formed by Geileral Assad. The provisional leadership is the consequence of the bloodless coup last week against the civilian faction of the Baath Party. In contrast to the deposed cabinet, which was dominated by a majority of the Baath Party, the new cabinet is divided between Baathist and other political factions. There are 13 Baathist Ministers and 13 others, representing the pro-Cairo, Socialists, the Communists and former Baath Party members. The appointment of two prominent Communists to the Cabinet contrasts with the previous criticism of General Assad by Communist publications in Beirut.
