Fiji threat to by-pass N.Z.
(New Zealand Press Association) SUVA, November 22. Fiji may by-pass New Zealand and import food from elsewhere in the future, the island’s Trade and Industry Minister (Mr Vijay R. Singh) warned.

Under the proposed increases general cargo would land in Fiji at $23.70 a ton. General cargo from Britain was only $30.30 a ton, he said. Mr Singh said the proposed increases would inevitably affect the price of food in Fiji as Fiji got much of its food from New Zealand. He said the freight increases could not be attribuuted to lack of cargo. Fiji merchants were having difficulty getting New Zealand deliveries because of a shortage of space.
