LAVER IN FORM
Returns to top tennis (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. The Australian, R. Laver, returned to winning form with a vengeance when he outplayed C. Richey (United States) to capture the men’s singles title in the Embassy indoor tennis tournament on Saturday. Laver won the 90-minute final, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, and collected the $6430 first prize.
The Australian produced a near vintage performance against the tenacious Texan after a recent slump in form. However, Richey is virtually assured of winning the $22,300 first prize in the inaugural grand prix series, which ends in Stockholm next week.
Richey leads the series by five points, and needs only two more to clinch the jackpot. The women’s singles final was won by Mrs B. J. King (United States), who defeated Mrs A. Jones (Britain), 8-6, 3-6, 6-1. In the play-offs for third places, K. R. Rosewall (Australia) beat E. C. Drysdale (South Africa), 5-7, 9-8, 6-3, and Miss V. Wade (Britain) and Miss F. Durr (France) shared after Miss Wade won the first set 6-4, and Miss Durr the second, 6-2.
