West-University well placed after setback

Sent in to bat on a Sydenham Park pitch which had something to offer for both aides, West Christchurch-Unlversity overcame an early setback—when it lost its captain, G. T. Dowling, and T. W. Jarvis, with only 13 runs on the board—to finish in a strong position to gain first innings pointe, at least. Partnerships between R. K. Allen and B. F. Hastings 1 and Hastings and B. Bhana, allowed West-University to score at a brisk pace to gain five bonus points and narrowly miss a seventh. West was Anally all out at 3.17 p.m. for 243 runs, scored in 217 minutes. I. R. Hartland led Sydenham off at a fast clip, but after he was out for 23, West-University surrendered runs most grudgingly. Sydenham finished the day with 80 runs for three wickets. scored in 138 minutes. K. T. Thompson was 20 not out. The Sydenham captain, B. J. Salt’s decision to put WestUnlverslty in on a pitch which was true, but fast, appeared to be about to pay handsome dividends when the 18-year-old opening bowler, A. Rule, playing in his first senior club match, claimed the wickets of Dowling and Jarvis. Dowling got himself oilt when he filckfid at a ball outside hts leg stump and was caught behind, while Jarvis was unlucky enough to edge one which rose suddenly and wan held by K- T. Thompson at short backward leg. Rule later finished With five wickets for 50. Allen's and Hasttng’s parthershlp of 70 was the most vital part of the innings. Hastings made his accustomed quiet beto score 89. He treated_anythlng short, or outside the off-stump—-especially balls delivered by the alow men, A. Bos and A. Glen—with severity, a beautiful cover drive off the back foot being his most productive stroke. Bhana also began alowly, allowIng Hastings to lead the assault He took over when Hastings was caught, by K. T. Thompson whan attempting to hook a looke ball from Rule, and mada an invaluable 58. . . Apart from R(Ue—whoso five victims Included three New Zeeland batsmen—the other opening bowler, I. -Wilson, was the most successful of the Sydenham attack. He ended the West offenslxe when he claimed Bhana’s wicket and then two of the tallenders in a determined late spell of bowling. Gaining little assistance from the pitch, the Sydenham spinners, particularly A. Boe, A. Glen, and D. L. Gallop, bowled loosely at times and proved expensive. Apart from brief fiourishes by Hartland, and later by K. T. Thompson, who hit ■ fouz and a six with lofted drives over longon off an over by P. A Sharp, Sydenham was well contained by the West-University bowling, ft finished with 80 runs, oft 27 overs. W. A. Thompson never appeared happy against D. G. Trist and G. R. Sherlock in scoring

19. He was dropped by C. W. Garrod at cover point oft Sherlock, and then well caught and bowled by Sharp during the next over. Each of the West-University bowlers attacked the stumps consistently. Sharp reaped a just reward for his efforts while Trist, although he conceded six no-balls, deserved more from some accurate, good-length bowltires: Messrs B. Dennison and G. Wainscott.
