Plovers seen at lake

A pair of spur-winged plovers, not usually seen so far north, were sighted when members of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society, led by Mr M. C. Cullen, visited Lake Ellesmere on Saturday. The party stopped first at the Irwell Stream mouth and later visited the property of Mr G. E. Rennie, of Irwell. The spur-winged plover, an Australian bird, was first recorded in New Zealand in 1886, and by 1932 a few birds started breeding neat Invercargill. In 1953 there were 200 of these birds in New Zealand. Single birds have previously been recorded at Lake Ellesmere and the Waimakariri River.
