Akaroa shops allowed trading exemption

Two Akaroa retail businesses were granted exemptions from normal closing times when applications were heard by the Shops and Offices Exemptions Tribunal (Mr E. A. Lee).

The applications, made by John Drummond, of 55 Beach Road, for the sale of clothing, and Banks Peninsula Stores, Ltd, of Rue Lavaud, for the sale of groceries, differed in respect of the times and periods in the year for which the exemptions were sought. Orders in identical terms, however, were made by the tribunal, to apply to both applicants. - The exemptions granted allow the businesses to trade between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. (9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays) daily between December 15 and January 31, from Easter Thursday to the Sunday following Easter, inclusive, and during school term holidays. NEW BRIGHTON SHOPS Applications were heard and granted in respect of eight businesses in the New Brighton area to allow exemptions to bring the shops into conformity with the pattern of trading in the area. Exemptions were granted to Streater's Handicraft Sup-

plies, 89 Seaview Road; Motherlove Wools, Ltd, 4 Seaview Road; Sedley Weels, Ltd, Seaview Road; R. Hannah and Company, Ltd, 768 Seaview Road; Hallenstein Brothers, Ltd, of 76C Seaview Road, and Mrs Pope, Ltd, 76A Seaview Road.

A formal objection only was lodged in respect of each application by the Canterbury Amalgamated Shop Assistants’ Union (Mr B. Alderdice). Applications by the Miracle Meat Marketerias, 66 Seaview Road, and South Pacific Supermarkets, Ltd, 113 Seaview Road (Mr E. J. Somers) for exemptions to allow them to sell fresh meat on Saturdays were allowed. The applications were opposed by the union and by the Canterbury Meat Retailers’ Association (Mr H. W. Hunter). Mr Lee said that as other businesses in the area were open to th? public on Saturdays, it seemed that the public interest would best be served by butchers' shops being open too. “I don’t see the logic of other businesses being open and these being closed,” he said. DISMISSED An application by Marjorie Oliver Taylor (Mr J. E. Collins) for an exemption to allow the opening of a ladies’ hairdressing

salon at 289 Clyde Road between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturdays was dismissed.

Mr Lee said it w r as clear that other shops in the area would be severely affected were the application granted. “In my view, this application is misconceived,” he said. Mr G. W. Rowntree appeared for other persons with similar businesses in the area in opposition to the application. The application was also opposed toy the shop assistants’ (M r B. AJderdiee). An application by Nelson ’ * to medy and Robin Bruce Knight (Mr R. F. B. Powell) to trade in new and second-hand hobby and model goods at 635 A Worcester Street, between 9 a.m. and 12 noon on Saturdays, was dismissed. Mr Alderdice appeared in opposition on behalf of the union. INSTITUTE SHOP Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd, was granted an exemption from the General Retail Shop Assistants’ Award, to allow the company to retail education textbooks and stationery from its shop at the Christchurch Technical Institute building in Fyfe Street, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday to Thursday. Mr Lee said very special circumstances were disclosed in the application. It was very desirable that, the proposed facilities for students be made available. AIRPORT SHOP The existing exemption from closing provisions for the shop of J. Ballantyne and Company, Ltd, at Christchurch Airport, from Monday to Saturday, was extended to allow the shop to open on Sundays, without restriction.
