VACANCY PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANT LAW DRAUGHTSMAN OR LEGAL OFFICER LAW DRAUGHTING OFFICE QUALIFIED BARRISTERS and solicitors, preferably under the age of 30, with experience in practice, are invited to apply for appointment as assistant law draughtsman in the Parliamentary law draughting office, Wellington. Consideration will be given to the appointment of more recently qualified persons as legal officer with opportunity for promotion to assistant law draughtsman after a probationary period. The work consists of the draughting of Government Bills and regulations. It also involves attendances at parliamentary committees and committees of the Cabinet, and conferences with Ministers, permanent heads, and senior officers of Government departments. It requires a sound knowledge of law, initiative, and the ability to express legal propositions clearly. Applicants should be prepared to make a career of legislative draughting. There are good prospects of future advancement in the office. Appointment as assistant law draughtsman is by the Governor-General under section 6 of the Statutes Draughting and Compilation Act, 1920, with the option of joining the Government superannuation scheme under the superannuation act, 1956. The salary for an assistant law draughtsman will be between $5871 and $9164 (with opportunity for advancement) according to qualifications and experience. The commencing salary for a legal officer will be up to $4651 according to qualifications and experience. ANIMAL HEALTH DIVISION Department of Agriculture ASSISTANT LIVESTOCK INSTRUCTORS DUTIES: Assistant Livestock Instructors are employed primarily to carry out testing of dairy and beef cattle in the National Disease Testing programmes. Appointees are encouraged to follow a study course including animal health, law and management and to sit an examination to qualify as Livestock Instructors. Qualified Livestock Instructors have much wider technical and regulatory duties in the field of animal disease control; assisting departmental veterinarians in disease investigations; extension work in animal diseases prevention. Other Livestock Instructor duties include work in animal quarantine, control of livestock movement, enforcement of the provisions of the Animals Protection Act, Animals Act and duties relating to the Agricultural Pests Destruction Act. QUALIFICATIONS: Diploma of Agriculture an advantage, otherwise preference given to applicants with School Certificate and farming experience. SALARIES: Up to $3375 per annum depending on secondary school qualifications and subsequent farming experience, promotion beyond this point is available on merit.
