Canterbury champion playing for N.I.

The former Canterbury under-21 and under-17 golf champion, B. D. Petherick, has won a place in the North Island team for the Inter-Island Junior Golfing Societies’ match at Shirley on November 28 and 29.

Petherick, who now lives in Palmerston North, was formerly a member of the Russley club and was regarded as one of Canterbury’s brightest hopes for the future. One of his former rivals on Christchurch courses, G. Urlwia, will be playing for the South Island. Formerly a reserve, Urlwin yesterday gained a place in the sixman team when the Southland left-hander, P. R. Adams, withdrew. The match at Shirley will be the fourth inter-island fixture for the societies’ teams. North has won the previous three contests, but South has always had an advantage in the men’s section. STRONG MEN’S TEAM I This year South has again produced a strong men’s team, and although the North Island has all the members of the New Zealand under 21 women’s side in its ranks, South should make a] stronger showing in this] section.
