Director of institute dies
(N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, Nov. 20. Dr F. B. Cousins, director of the Cawthron Institute in Nelson for the last three years, died yesterday. He was aged 43. Dr Cousins spent 14 years on the staff of Otago University before coming to Nelson, during which time he was in the United States for one year. For two years he was assistant, and acting production manager, of Glaxo Laboratories pharmaceutical factory in Palmerston North. All his research had been in animal work before he switched to plant research on joining the Cawthron Institute. Dr Cousins studied bone chemistry in New York state in 1962 and formed the biochemistry research group at Otago University when he returned to New Zealand to work on the study of calcium and phosphate. Dr Cousins was vice-presi-dent of the Otago University Graduates’ Association, vicepresident of the New Zealand Institute of Science Technicians, a co-opted member of the Otago Polytechnic Council, and vice-commodore of the Otago University Yacht Club. He is survived by his wife and fdur children.
