Park Terrace hotel
Sir, —That this proposal can even make news shows the mockery being made of the City Council Blue Book. No doubt this tasteless proposal will supersede an imaginative scheme only two blocks away which would not only conform with the Blue Book, but would be architecturally designed, would enhance the Town Hall block, and would really be an asset to this city. My Blue Book says a licensed hotel on R. 5 land would require at least two acres, a private hotel 100 persons per acre. That the council can allow crass commercialisation of this delightful residential area bows my head in shame.—Yours, etc., R. A. OWEN. November 6, 1970.
[The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) replies: “On the ! information supplied to the ! council, the proposed ‘hotel’ ‘ constitutes a ‘private hotel.’ A ‘private hotel’ is defined ' in the district scheme as fol--1 lows: ‘Means temporary ac--1 commodation (being unliceni sed in the terms or the Sale i of Liquor Act, 1962, and its i amendments) for persons rei quired generally to share ser- . vice facilities.’ A ‘private i hotel* is a predominant use in the particular area, subject
to compliance with the appropriate provision. The council is aware of the amenity value of this locality, and will no doubt, use its powers to ensure that the design and layout of the building are in keeping with the character of the locality.’’]
