Life member elected

Mrs Rona Fleming, of Christchurch, was elected an honorary life member of the Canterbury Society of Arts at its annual meeting on Wednesday evening. Moving that she be elected, the president (Mr J. Oakley) said that Mr§ Fleming, who was indisposed and not present, had been a member of the society since 1935 and a council member for 25 years. Until her retirement from the council last year she had done a tremendous service for the society. Mrs Fleming is the third life member elected by the society. Mr Oakley said that the year had been a busy one for the society, 44 exhibitions having been held in its galleries. A selling gallery had functioned well and a pic-ture-hire service inaugurated. The programme of exhibition for 1971 was almost filled and the council was already planning its 1972 programme. He urged that still more members be recruited in order, among other things, to reduce the mortgage on the society’s building. Membership is now more than 1600, 199 having joined during the year. This year’s winner of the C.S.A.-Guthrey travel award, Mrs Doris Holland, gave an illustrated talk about her visit to art schools and galleries in Australia.

The following officers were elected: President, Mr Oakley; vice-presidents, Mrs Holland, Miss O. Spencer Bower, Professor H. J. Simpson, Messrs P. J. Bea ven, F. M. Warren and W. W. Cumming; council, Messrs T. J. Taylor, E. A. Crothall, J. Trengrove, S. H. Wood, A. J. Bisley, D. Mitchell, J. G. Riminton, and J. T. Nuttall; treasurer, Mr J. M. Ott; auditor, Mr B. F. Bicknell.
