Back pay free of surcharge
(N.Z, Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 19. There was good news for about 30,000 public servants today: the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) has. changed his mind and will not tax their back pay at the 10 per cent surcharge rate. The Government decision was contained in a letter sent by Mr Muldoon to the Public Service Association today. The introduction by Mr Muldoon of the 10 per cent tax surcharge meant that public, servants who had not received their back pay by December 1 would have it taxed at the new rate of 23c in the dollar, instead of 21c. It is understood a figure between $30,000 and $50,000 was involved. The president of the Public Service Association (Mr S. J. Rodger) said in a statement yesterday that the association had already made representations to Mr Muldoon without success.
