FINE RUN BY PACER
"The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. The Pukekohe star pacer, Birdie Hanover, showed by a stylish final yesterday that he is doing splendidly in preparation for his clash with the New Zealand Trotting Cup winner, James, at Alexandra Park on Tuesday night. The pair are engaged in the W. Hosking Free-For-All, run over one mile from a mobile start on the second night of the Franklin Trotting Club’s meeting. Cadmus made the pace for
Birdie Hanover over 13 furlongs. Birdie Hanover effortlessly drew alongside once into the straight and he was being restrained to keep with Cadmus at the finish. The last mile and a half was done in 3min 20sec, the last half mile in 1:3, and quarter in 30 4-ssec. Birdie Hanover looks a picture. He has not drawn too well at No. 7 on Tuesday but his brilliance will take him a long way. Other smart trials yesterday by candidates for the Franklin meeting were done by Clarence Leslie, Shontelle and Eden’s Chann. Clarence Leslie (Martinovich) was too good for
Amber Dear (J. Hughes) over two miles in 4:33 the last half in 1:4 l-ssec, and quarter in 30 4-ssec. Shontelle. (A. Slater) a fancied candidate for the Stewards’ Handicap beat Snowbound (Louden) by a length and a half over 13 furlongs. The pace was only over the last round, the last half mile being cut out in 1:3. After being well clear most of the way, Eden’s Charm (Bayer) was eased to be only a length in front of Gallant Hanover (Wallen) with a big gap to Hilo Bay (R. Hughes) at the end of 13 furlongs, the last quarter was cut out in 32 l-ssec.
