N.Z.B.C. RADIO
“No drop in standards” (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 18. The N.Z.B.C.’s controller of news and current affairs (Mr J. L. Hartstonge) said to the television inquiry today that he was not aware of any drop in the standards of corporation radio in Auckland since the advent of private radio.
He was being questioned about a statement to this effect last week by the corporation's Director-General (Mr L. R. Sceats) in evidence to the Broadcasting Authority's inquiry into a second channel.
To Mr I. L. McKay, counsel ifor the Associated Network group, Mr Hartstonge said there had been some changes in the format of corporation radio news in Auckland but this had been planned for a long time. He agreed the new style had been introduced only two days before Radio Hauraki went on the air, but said it would have come about in spite of Hauraki. Asked why it had been introduced in Auckland and not Wellington, he said it came about through the initiative of the Auckland staff. Tomorrow the corporation will call the managing director of 8.8. C. Television (Mr Huw Wheldon) to give evidence.
