Cooksley at Takanini

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. A former Taranaki trainer and leading hurdle and steeplechase rider, C. R. Cooksley, has leased a property at Takanlni and hopes to build a team with an emphasis on junipers. Cooksley, who served his apprenticeship with E. Temperton, then A. R. T. Beale, at Awapuni, enjoyed fair success on the flat before he began riding jumpers. Over hurdles and bigger fences he enjoyed much success, Flockhart, Ballador, Tilly Light, Elrey, and Baron’s Craig being among his winning mounts. Elrey, in the 1962 Great Northern Hurdles, gave him his most important win. In the* 1957 Grand National Hurdles he ran second on Marau. Cooksley began training a team at Waitara 18 months ago and brought himself much attention in the north through the good form of Nasa Fair, which won six races last season, including a hurdles double at the Waikato spring meeting. He has leased a property of seven acres at Takanini.
