CUSTOMS BREACHES
Guilty plea by car firm (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct 15. Paine Brothers (Motors), Ltd, Otahuhu car dealers, pleaded guilty to 33 breaches of the customs regulations in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court- today. The firm faced 64 charges but 31 were withdrawn by Mr S. B. W. Grieve, for the Customs Department. Paine Brothers, represented by Mr D. A. R. Williams, admitted 31 charges of being knowingly concerned in a breach of conciliation of a permit to import a motor vehicle. All these charges were for selling a vehicle before the one-year ownership condition on new cars had elapsed. Two charges of counselling and procuring people to make a false declaration to import a motor vehicle were also admitted. Mr D. G. Sinclair, SM, convicted the company on 33 charges and adjourned the hearing until an appeal against fines imposed in an earlier case was heard. Penalties will be imposed on November 5.
