Pueblo capt. to retire

(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter —Copyright) MONTEREY (California), October 16. Commander Lloyd Bucher, aged 43, the captain of the United States spy-ship, Pueblo, will retire from the navy in November, 1971, after 20 years service, it was announced in Monterey. Commander Bucher, whose ship and crew were seized and held for 11 months, by North Korea in 1968, said that the Navy exercised no pressure upon him, but that he felt he could not pass the physical examination necessary for further promotion. He is at present at the Navy post-graduate school, at Monterey; a post which he has held since the “Pueblo affair” was officially closed. When the Pueblo was returned, the Secretary for the Navy (Mr John Chaffee) overruled a recommendation for court-martial on the grounds that Commander Bucher had “suffered enough” from his experience.
