Christchurch Cathedral
Sir, —As a Christian I am more than a little concerned with the comments of “Shocked Christian.” Has he or she had the pleasure of visiting cathedrals in other great cities of the world, for instance, England? Most of the cathedrals there I have had the pleasure of visiting and giving my humble dona-
tion to the "plate” and also purchasing postcards and other literature concerning the cathedral, knowing that all donations are used towards maintaining and keeping places of worship open and in good repair for those of us who are Christians. I would suggest that the next time "Shocked Christian” goes to church he or she searches his or her conscience before the “plate” comes round.—Yours, etc., P. WOOLF. October 16, 1970.
Sir, —Your correspondent, “Shocked Christian,” is very easily shocked. In the English cathedrals almost without exception there is a stall —generally in the rear, not in the porch—as in Christchurch. I fail to see how it ruins the atmosphere that surrounds a place of worship. If St Paul’s and Westminster Abbey have stalls and still maintain their atmosphere, I think that Christchurch Cathedral can do the same.— Your?, etc., ' NOT SHOCKED. October 16, 1970. [This correspondence is now closed. Ed., "The Press.”]
