Increases ‘not offset’
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 15. Manufacturers had increased prices by amounts which, in a number of cases, failed to offset increased costs, the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Shelton) told Parliament today. He was replying to a question from Mr P. Blanchfield, (Lab., Westland) asking what steps were being taken against manufacturers and retailers who increased the prices of articles in cost structures. Mr Shelton said some manufacturers and distributors applied price increases to goods already in stock, but this, action could not be considered in isolation. In the case of manufacturers it was usual that at least part of the cost increases which had justified the price increase had been incurred in the production of goods in stock. Any system designed to examine the actions of each manufacturer and distributor on the price of stock when prices were increased would present inordinate administrative difficulties.
