SUCCESS IN FENCING
A LTHOUGH they won no titles, Canterbury competitors enjoyed their most successful tournament since 1960 at the national secondary schools’ fencing championships in Auckland recently. In the team events, Canterbury was runner-up to Auckland and D. Barltrop’s bronze medal in the sabre event was a triumph of guile over technique.
Next year the event will be held in Christchurch and on their home ground Canterbury contestants will be a tougher proposition, particularly in the girls’ foil team and individual events. The task will be made easier by the fact that the majority of the victorious Auckland girls will be leaving school this year.
The success of the fencers was due in part to the initiative of the Canterbury Fencing Council which invited the only professional instructor in New Zealand, P. Lillie, of Auckland, a graduate of the British Academy of Fencing, to Christchurch.
Mr Lillie conducted an intensive weekend coaching course shortly before the championships. However, it was obvious this was not long enough. The Aucklanders’ preparation included a five-day training programme for five hours a day under the direction of Mr Lillie.
