Nostalgic occasion

An interested spectator at the Canterbury-Otago Rugby match at Dunedin last Saturday was the oldest life member of the Otago Rugby Union, Mr 11. G. Munro, who was a hooker in the famous 1924 All Black team. Mr Munro had a particular reason to view the game with nostalgia, for 50 years earlier, he had played for Canterbury against Otago on the same ground. Later, Mr Munro played for Otago, and it was from

this union that he gained All Black honours. He still has vivid recollections of the game in Christchurch which set him on the path to fame. “Harry Taylor (a 191314 AU Black) was the referee, and he put the ball into the scrums. He also happened to be a Canterbury selector, and, as a result of that game, I found myself in the Canterbury team. Not many players get a lucky break like that.”
