‘Near state of anarchy'
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 18. A near state of industrial anarchy existed in many industries, the chairman of Cable Price Downer, Ltd (Mr K. C. Campbell) told the annual meeting of the company today. In a supplied copy of his address, Mr Campbell said he had for several years referred to the inhibiting effects of labour problems on several of the group’s operations. “In recent months, the situation has worsened so rapidly that a near state of industrial anarchy exists in many industries,” he said. “It is extremely unfortunate, at a time when New Zealand’s export drive is starting to reap worth-while benefits, that labour stoppages and demands could well affect the country’s ability to meet the export targets so badly needed,” Mr Campbell said.
The payroll tax was described by Mr Campbell as “an unfortunate piece of legislation.” “Inevitably, it will enter the country’s cost structure and will become another inflationary factor,” he said.
