LOOTING IN BELFAST
British soldiers exonerated (N.Z.P.A .-Reuter —Copyright> BELFAST, Sept. 18, British soldiers accused of looting, while they searched for arms during the riots in Belfast last July were cleared in an Army statement issued yesterday. The statement said that of 450 allegations made by people living in the city’s Lower Falls area, where much of the summer’s bloody civil clashes occurred, 58 were “of such a nature as to suggest that an offence might have been committed and that a charge could possibly be brought against an individual.”
But it added: “Although there has been the fullest possible investigation by the Army team brought from the United Kingdom and working with the Royal Ulster Constabulary, no evidence has emerged which would justify taking action against any individual.” The statement said that 18 solders were wounded by gunfire and grenades in the heavy street fighting, and in the circumstances damage to property was inevitable.
