New bishop appointed
(N-Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 18. The Most Rev. Reginald Delargey has been appointed Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, said the apostolic delegate to New Zealand (Archbishop Etteldorf) in a statement today. The appointment of Bishop Delargey by the Pope follows the resignation earlier this year of Archbishop Liston.
Bishop Delargey, who is 56, was born in Timaru and studied at Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, and the Pontifical Urban College de Propaganda Fide in Rome. He was ordained in 1938, and after postgraduate studies in Rome was awarded a doctorate in 1939. He was assistant parish priest at Takapuna, Auckland, until 1940 when he was appointed director of youth and social welfare work in Auckland. In 1957, he was appointed Auxiliary-Bishop to Archbishop Liston. After Archbishop Liston’s resignation in April this year. Bishop Delargey was elected vicar capitular of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Auckland.
