Works At Half Strength
(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, September 7. The Horotiu freezing works continued at half its manpower strength today handling the local kill as the freezing works deadlock went into its second week. “How long we can continue even with the local kill depends on how long the machinery keeps going,” the works manager (Mr J. O. Wells) said today.
A dispute by about 300 fitters has closed two of the five Auckland works and the others are working at less than half speed. About 20,000 unwanted bobby calves are being held cn dairy farms throughout the Waikato and Bay of Plenty. The president of the Auckland Freezing Workers’ Union (Mr F. E. Barnard) said the stoppage was disastrous to members of the union.
“By Wednesday there will be virtually none of our members left in work,” he said. Members were looking for other jobs to keep them going.
