Retirement Of Priest
The parish priest of Woolston, the Rt Rev. O. Gallagher, will retire at the end of this month, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby), has announced. Born in Roscommon, Ireland, in 1893, Monsignor Gallagher was ordained a priest by the Bishop of Clifton at Kilkenny in 1919. He took up his first appointment in Christchurch as assistant priest in the Cathedral parish in 1920. Two years later he became parish priest of Akaroa and in 1927 parish priest of Lincoln. He was subsequently parish priest at Fairlie in 1932, Ashburton in 1944, Darfield in 1947, Lyttelton in 1951, Lincoln for a second time in 1953 and Woolston in 1956.
During his 50 years of ministry in the Christchurch diocese he was responsible for the building of St John the Evangelist Church, Little River, and the building of the new St Anne’s Church at Woolston. For some years, Monsignor Gallagher was a diocesan consuitor. In 1968 he was appointed a domestic prelate by Pope Paul. He plans to retire to Ireland.
