Research In Philippines

The first New Zealand geographer to be awarded a study fellowship by the Asian and Pacific Council (Aspac), Dr R. G. Cant of the University of Canterbury, will leave in a few days for the Philippines.

While in the Philippines Dr Cant will do research work into the development of sugar cultivation on the island of Negros in the late 19th and 20th centuries, as well as travelling throughout the various provinces studying other agricultural developments.

He will be attached to the centre for South-East Asian Studies at Silliman University in Damaguete City. After two months in the Philippines Dr Cant will spend a further month visiting countries in South-East Asia on an Erskine grant-in-aid from the University of Canterbury.
