LEADERSHIP “LOST”

New Zealand had lost its moral leadership in the world by Its pro-apartheid stand in 1960 and by its involvement in Vietnam, the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev. W. A. Pyatt) told the annual meeting of the National Council of Churches in Christchurch.

He was speaking during the presentation of a recommendation passed by the council, urging the Government to withdraw all New Zealand troops from Vietnam without delay, and to offer substantial aid for reconstruction. , Bishop Pyatt said that the presence of New Zealand troops in Vietnam was a moral, not a physical, issue. “Because it is a moral issue, we have the right to take a moral stand,” he said.
