Wind-thrown Trees

About 150 acres of trees in the Eyrewell State Forest were blown down in last week’s storm, accordng to the Canterbury Conservator of Forests (Mr J. W. Levy). The wind-thrown area comprises mainly old growth in the west of the forest, in an area where 7000 acres of pinus radiata were blown down by strong north-west gales in 1964. Some of the trees, which were about 40 years old, were broken, but most of the stand was uprooted, Mr Levy said last evening. Logging will be turned to salvage in this area. An anemometer supplied by the Meteorological Service had recorded wind speeds up to 44 miles an hour before it went out of order last Friday, before the stronger gales. Although the Friday gales were considered to be stronger than those in 1964, less damage was done because much of the area most exposed to the north-west winds had been logged since 1964.
