Baguette Beaten

(N.Z. Press Association) SYDNEY. The champion colt, Mzguette, crashed to his first defeat in the roughly-run Canterbury Guineas (nine furlongs and 80 yards) on Saturday.

Baguette, ridden by B. Quinton, just managed to squeeze into third in front of Queensland horse, Gunsynd. The winner and runner-up were Boyai Show and Bed God, both trained by T. Smith. Royal Show won by a short half head, with Baguette one length and a halt away:

The New Zealand-breds, Treboul and Maori King, finished sixth and eighth respectively in the 10-horse field.

Baguette was knocked around during the race and several times was held up for a run. A shocked Quinton would say no: thing except: "Baguette was unlucky. You will read plenty about it in the stewards’ report.”

Stewards caused some surprise when they did not hold an inquiry but later took the unusual step of inviting the press and Quinton to view a screening of the race. The chief steward, J. Meehan, told them there had been a lot of discussion about the race and that he wanted to show the film to allow those present to draw their own conclusions. Earlier he said the film would show Quinton had been responsible for most of the trouble suffered by his mount.

Horses raised across the Tasman won four of the seven races on the card. They were: Tropic Jewel (Pakistan II Coral's Lass), tn the Petersham Handicap (six furlongs), for three-year-old fillies. Portable (Alcimedes—Fantina) in the Canterbury Handicap (nine furlongs and 80 yards). Broker's Tip (Summertime Fatehpur Sikrj) in the welght-for-age Canterbury Stakes (six furlongs), and Connery (Test Case—Carnation) in the Belmore Graduation (six furlongs), for three-year-old colts and geldings.
