Satellite Bits
(N.Z Press Assn—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Sept 6.
Chunks of metal found scattered across three American states were probably parts of a Russian satellite, the Air Force said. An Air Force spokesman said that the objects, which fell on Friday night in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, were believed to be remnants of a Soviet Cosmos-316 satellite.
No Injuries or property damage were reported. A 3001 b chunk that fell near Beaver, Oklahoma, was being taken to a nearby Air Force laboratory for tests. The object was approximately 30in long and Win wide, the spokesman said. The North America/! Defence Command in Colorado Springs had predicted the decay of the Soviet satellite along a path where the pieces were found.
The satellite was launched last December 23. The Air Force said if the parts prove to be from the Soviet satellite they will be offered to the Russians.
