Leeds Gets Consolation For Cup Defeat

(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON. The English first division league leader, Leeds United, gained some consolation for last season's cup final defeat with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea on Saturday. Leeds' persistent attacking was rewarded with a secondhalf goal from the World Cup striker, A. Clarke, to give it 13 points from seven matches.

Manchester City remained three points behind, with a ?:ame in hand, after a convincng, 4-1, home win against West Bromwich Albion.

Arsenal jumped into third place on nine points thanks to two first-half goals in six minutes from G. Armstrong, against its London rival, Tottenham Hotspur.

Crystal Palace, which narrowly escaped relegation last season, continued to impress, and is in fourth position, after a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, which had been lying third in the table.

The reigning champion, Everton, scored its first victory of the season, at the expense of West Ham United. Derby County’s championship challenge suffered a setback with its 2-1 home defeat against Newcastle United, and Ipswich Town and Burnley reversed their respective places at the bottom of the table as Ipswich crushed Burnley, 3-0.
