STOP-WORK MEETING

Lyttelton Workers

All members of the Lyttelton Harbour Board Employees’ Union attended a special stop-work meeting from 1 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. on Friday. According to the union president (Mr J. E. Kelly) the meeting was called to discuss matters concerning their new award. No statement was released.

During the stoppage, two ships became automatically idle, as they were dependent on Harbour Board equipment. These were the Cap Ortegal which was using cranes at Cashin Quay, and the Maunganui which was loading bulk wheat at the wheat silo berth.

Other vessels, the Tarawera, Pateke, Cap Finisterre and the Theodor Fontaine were able to continue to work by using ship’s gear. The roll-on ferry Holmlea was not affected.

Following the meeting normal work resumed at the port as Harbour Board employees went back to their normal tasks.
