Japanese and New Zealand riders won the first three places for Yamaha in a 20-lap race for motor-cycles above 250 c.c. on the opening day of the Malaysian Grand Prix meeting at Batu Tiga. Another New Zealand rider, G. Perry, on a Suzuki T5OO. dropped out in the sixth lap with a broken exhaust after gaining the lead in the fourth lap. However, he set a record for the 2.14-mile lap in the earlier practice, going round in imin 35,lsec—2.4sec better than the record he set in the Selangor Grand Prix earlier this year.

A Motohashi beat his teammate. S. Mimuro. by o.2sec. completing the 45 miles in 32min 54 6sec. Both rode 349 c.c. Yamaha TR2 machines, as did T. Discomber (New Zealand). who was third in 33min 29.1 sec. An Indonesian. Sahsono. also on a Yamaha TR3-, was fourth.
