Go-Slow To Begin In P.O. Today

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, September 6.

The Post Office Association had left no stone unturned in its endeavours to persuade the Government to join it at the negotiating table in meaningful talks, the association’s general I secretary,-Mr I. Reddish, said today.

On the Post Office goslow, which will begin throughout the country tomorrow, Mr Reddish said: “l am very sorry that we have been forced to take this action. “We have been pleading with the Government for a

fortnight to see reason and start talking. In fact, we convened an emergency meeting of our executive committee for three days last week waiting for a positive sign from Government.

“The best they have come up with is a reiteration of a : previous offer which was turned down by the Combined State Services organisations on August 20. “The Government appears [to want to turn this dispute [into a major confrontation. Unfortunately, it’s going to be the public that suffers because of this attitude on the part of the Government. “For 80 years this association has been moderate in every respect. We have co-op-

erated with the Government at every turn. We have never before been forced to take direct action like this. “But as the Government is not prepared to compromise, as it is not willing to talk about our legitimate claims, it has given us no option but to implement the goslow.” Mr Reddish said.
