Army Drops Charges
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Sept 6. The United States Army has dropped charges against another soldier in connection with the alleged My Lai massacre in Vietnam in March, 1968. A Defence Department spokesman said that allegations of premeditated murder against Corporal Kenneth Schiel had been dismissed. There would be no further proceedings in the case. Charges of alleged murder and rape brought against Sergeant Charles Hutto in connection with the incident had also been dismissed, the spokesman said. But allegations of assault to commit murder, and perjury, against the sergeant would be referred for trial by a gen-
eral court-martial, he said. No trial date has yet been fixed. Lieutenant-General A. Connor, commanding officer of the Third United States Army, dropped the charges because investigations had shown that there was insufficient evidence to warrant further proiceedings, the spokesman said.
