Upper Waitaki TV Coverage
Sir, —I appreciate Mr Norman’s comments, and was aware that a maintenance grant is being made but understand that this, at times, was insufficient to cover the cost of the substantial repairs which were necessary. Without providing the means to view, the N.Z.B.C. benefits from TV licence income from the area covered by this translator, which must be far in excess of the maintenance grant or loan required. If this translator was not available, the N.Z.B.C. would lose this income. Until such time as the N.Z.B.C. can assume direct responsibility, those who rely on and contribute to television societies for their viewing are, in effect, subsidising the N.Z.B.C.’s operations elsewhere. Incidentally, although we may be in the DNTV coverage area, this translator provides reception from CHTV3.—Yours, etc., J.A.B. September 2, 1970.
