Prince And Mayor

Sir,—First impressions are lasting. Therefore, it is important, when introducing distinguished guests, to avoid the many depressing areas which abound in Christchurch. “A. B. Cedarian” reminds us that Royalty arrived here via the Ferry Road roundabout and along the banks of the Heathcote drain. I would remind “A. B. Cedarian” the view would have been even more disturbing and depressing if the route chosen had been a few turns around the Addington saleyards roundabout. To come upon this in the city in 1970 is unbelievable. It is like a transplant from “Snake Gully.” Perhaps Mr Guthrey and his energetic council could devise a few frills to camouflage this outdated meeting place, reminiscent of my childhood days spent in a very, very far-back country village.—Yours, etc., CITIZEN. September 2, 1970.
