Australian Market Firms Towards The Close

Australian markets closed yesterday with a burst of finishing strength after an uncertain start.

Queensland Mines jumped 300 c on the day to close at 2600 c, but uranium prospects were mixed.

Peko Wallsend was up 20c, while United Uranium was steady on the day, Kathleen Investments was up 40c and Mary Kathleen was down 40c. Beach was among the losers and dropped 45c after its report on drilling progress in Turkey. Metals Exploration, retreated after a company announcement and lost 50c.

On the relatively steady industrial board, T.N.T. peaked at 195 c for a 6c rise after its bid for the Union Steamship Company, while Thiess ended a hesitant week to close 7c better at 405 c;

The leaders were strong, although B.H.P. lost 5c and Bora! advanced Bc.
